I Spoke at DIST.43, "AI Usage Techniques for Web Production Workplaces"

On Friday, April 12, DIST.43 was held at Nakano Central Park. This time the theme was how people use AI in actual work. I gave a talk titled "ChatGPT Quietly Used for English Work."

According to the event page, DIST is "a creative community connecting everyone involved with the web across job types and technologies." The venue preparation was fairly large-scale, and I found myself thinking about how study groups like this have decreased since the COVID period.

I had known about the event for quite a while, but since the location is around Nakano, I had not had many chances to go until now. It is in the opposite direction from Chiba Prefecture, where I live.

By chance I received a speaking request, and since I had wanted to go for a long time, this became my first time participating. I will quote the event overview.

> We are truly in the AI era. Information related to AI is everywhere, from how to use new services to prompt tips. At the same time, engineers, designers, and directors working in web production are still exploring how AI can actually be used in their work. > > For those of us who have improved and streamlined all kinds of work with various tools and workflows, our expectations for the new world made visible by AI should be stronger than our anxiety about losing work. > > At DIST.43, we invite people working in web production to talk about how they currently use AI in practice. Whether you use AI heavily or are still just interested, please come see how others are making use of AI.

My presentation used the very common combination of ChatGPT and English.

I think a large number of AI users use the combination of ChatGPT and English, but since the theme was AI usage in actual work, I talked about my real impressions from using it at work.

For example, people who work mainly in English are probably imagined as having reasonably high TOEIC-like scores or being able to speak to some extent. I am not like that at all, but as a personal challenge, I jumped into that kind of environment.

In this era, even if you are not good at English, you can somehow move work forward with the help of AI. I probably could not have taken on the same challenge ten years ago.

I think there are probably three important things for continuing work that uses English.

  • Getting through the various communication situations that occur every day
  • Obtaining necessary information and communicating information that needs to be conveyed
  • Improving the English you are not good at little by little through daily work

As someone who is not good at English, I think what matters is overcoming these together with AI.

Of course, if you have money, you can hire translators or coaches. But if I had money in the first place, I would not be working, so what matters is how to survive with the limited cards I have.

In the short time available, I described some representative examples of my own efforts. The key point is probably treating AI as a teacher. So I do not use it very much like a tool with lots of prompts.

Here are the slides. Everyone, let us survive this era while getting along well with AI too.
